9 x 12 inches
watercolor

This resulted in some impromptu painting I did a couple months ago. Out of the 20 I started, this was the only one I liked. I really can't say too much about it. I do enjoy the energy about it.

This one gives me a warm feeling... I don't know, but I really like it :D The colours are so pretty, brownish but still fresh, very nice!

I love it! I love how it was completed "impromptu." Great choice of colors, great brush strokes. :D I wish I could paint spontaneously with results like that!

Of course! If you are still learning, feel free to use student grade papers. Just make sure they are 140lb weight paper (300gsm)

When you want to spend a little more money buy a paper that is 100% cotton, like Arches or canson montval. Read the packages to get a good idea if it is or not. IT is more expensive, but it also takes water, and works much better.

thanks for your advice, I found a student watercolour book with 300gsm in the shops... and I'm loving how it doesn't wrinkle or flake paper
was wondering if there's much of a difference between Arches and Canson?

oh hey! So sorry for the late reply, I should be back on dA daily again ^^

Glad you are enjoying the 300gsm paper, it really helps. As for canson vs. arches, they are both good manufactureres, so it is up to the artist to decide which one performs better for them. Now there are differences between each type of paper.

Things that make each type of paper different are, how thick the paper is, is it acid-free? is it 100% cotton? hot press or cold press does not matter (that is how heavy the texture is). Unfortunately there is no uniform way between manufacturers to present this info, so it takes some practice to get used to this info.

For you, being a beginner, it is not important if your paper is acid-free or not. Acid-free is important for archiveability of your piece, meaning it will not break down as the art ages.

I would focus on the feel of the paper, either hot-press (smoother paper) or cold-press (rougher paper) or rough press (roughest paper) and see what one works best for your technique. For me, when doing illustration, I prefer a hot-press. When painting, I prefer a cold-press.

hope this helps! :-)

Thanks! :-)

I'm not sure if 'impromptu' is the best word. Another way to describe it is to paint without a final idea in mind. Let what happen on the page happen. Though halfway through this, I saw something like a bird, and started painting it like that.

Hope that helps. :D

Yes, whenever I am not painting well, I make a bunch of paintings together to just get my arms moving and brain thinking. It helps me get out of my "funk". Sometimes I get a decent piece out of it. I think I will do more this week too. :-)
