Streetlight by KelliRoos Streetlight by KelliRoos
This was mainly a practice for me for moving light over a surface and how to blend it into a background. I'm kinda happy with it, but I think it could've been better. But I"m a bit lost on how to do so at the moment.

Let me know if you see anything I could do to make a piece like this better in the future. :-)

it's perfect! i always feel watercolor IS because it doesn't blend. and yellow is so hard to work with before turning muddy, but i don't see that you even had that trouble <3 i feel you handled this masterfully!

Light is your strong point! Another good exercise it seems?

It's one of those city squirrels, it's not as rugged at the country squirrels. Though the country squirrels are totally jealous of the stylin' hats the city squirrels wear.

Thus starting the hat class warfare of the late 19th century in the Squirrel Kingdom.

After seeing this, I want to see your take on the poster for "The Cat Returns."

Yeah, when I painted this, my brush was still very unsure, I need to attempt this again in the future.

Y'know, the closer an object is to a light source, the sharper and better defined shadows are. Now these type of rules don't work in all situations, but I'd experiment with clearly defining a few hairs in his coat and wrinkles in his clothes where they are closes to the streetlamp. Maybe not on this one though, it's too cute as it is :)

You are completely right. I was approaching the lighting from a more simplistic cell-shading sense, and didn't evolve it with the lighting I chose for this work. Your first line is a great way to think about it, thanks!

Doing lighting on a box is so much easier than a squirrel, I don't have to worry about capturing the emotion or thought of a box! XD but there in lies the challenge that I will meet.

Well, I usually don't notice/comment on these things unless I'm specifically prompted to. What I'm looking for in a painting is a certain atmosphere or soul, and this has pretty much nothing to do with getting the lighting right. As far as I'm concerned, this painting is a success :)

Oh yes, I understand. Sadly, there are too many people around here who read a helpful comment or a thoughtful critique as an insult. But I appreciate that you did, that lighting tip was something that I observe in drawing from life, but, never had it in a rule that was easy to follow (if that makes sense) thank you. :-)

thank you for the kind words.

The background is brilliant, but the critter's shadows are wrong somehow--especially around the coat, I think.

thank you, I was very concerned about getting the blend right in the background.

Yes, I think the light is not as strong on the coat where is should be, and my attempt at back lighting is too strong. I need to realize these weaknesses before I try this again.

Oh.. this one is lovely. Besides I love the lightning effect those street lamps do (it reminds me a lot of those old fairy tales and stuff like Narnia).
